AIOI R&D Lab-Oxford and Natcap Partner to Transform Biodiversity Risk Management With Cutting-Edge Nature Intelligence

Natcap has entered into a strategic partnership with Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Co., Ltd., a member of the MS&AD Insurance Group (MS&AD).

Innovative global partnership delivers risk assessments, empowering businesses to quantify, mitigate, and integrate biodiversity risks into financial decision-making

London, 26th February 2025 – Nature loss is not just an environmental challenge - it’s a financial risk that businesses can no longer afford to ignore. With climate-related events on the rise, organisations that fail to account for nature-related risks face growing regulatory penalties, reputational damage, and operational disruptions.

In response, Aioi R&D Lab-Oxford and Natcap (Natural Capital Research) have collaborated to support Natcap develop an innovative solution that enables companies to assess the location, type, and scale of biodiversity risks.

This collaboration is further reinforced by a strategic capital and business alliance between Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Co., Ltd. (a member of the MS&AD Insurance Group), the Japanese parent company of AND-E (Aioi Nissay Dowa Europe), and Natcap. The investment is driving the rapid development of Natcap’s nature intelligence platform, expanding co-operation in sales, and enabling Natcap’s entry into the Japanese and East Asian markets.

Bridging industry and academia to address global challenges

Established in 2022, Aioi R&D Lab-Oxford was founded through a partnership between Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, AND-E, and Mind Foundry, an AI spinout from Oxford University. As the research and development arm of AND-E, the Lab’s mission is to bring humans and AI together to tackle real-world challenges, from autonomous mobility and climate change to continued ageing populations.

The partnership with Natcap, a UK-based company helping businesses measure, report, and act on nature risks, is one of the Lab’s flagship initiatives. Supporting Natcap’s continued advancement of its proprietary nature intelligence-driven solutions, the collaboration has contributed to the first-of-its-kind Nature Risk Solution. This solution empowers businesses to integrate nature-related financial risks into their decision-making and implement targeted mitigation strategies.

A data-driven approach to biodiversity risk management

The collaborative effort utilises cutting-edge geospatial data to conduct automated site-level risk assessments. By harnessing Natcap’s proprietary nature intelligence capabilities, the solution enables organisations to take nature-positive actions, reallocate capital towards conservation, and comply with evolving regulatory frameworks, including the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

“Businesses are increasingly being held accountable for their environmental impact, with new regulations requiring them to measure, report, and act on their environmental risks,” said Ken Onuma, CTO, Aioi R&D Lab-Oxford. “However, biodiversity data is often scarce and rarely aligned with financial risk assessment. Through our partnership with Natcap, we are supporting the refinement and broader adoption of a pioneering solution that enables businesses to integrate nature into their strategies while giving regulators and customers greater confidence in their sustainability commitments.”

A comprehensive nature risk library

A key innovation is the development of the first-ever comprehensive Nature Risk Library, containing a database of over 1,000 nature-related risks. This resource provides businesses with tailored risk assessments, ensuring a clear, defensible approach to biodiversity risk management.

Built in consultation with sustainability managers, risk experts, and TNFD specialists, the solution integrates company-specific data with Natcap’s nature intelligence to assess exposure and likelihood of nature related risks. Early trials indicate that this approach delivers granular, business-specific risk insights that can be leveraged for financial risk ratings and long-term sustainability planning.

Scalability and long-term nature intelligence

With its scalable design, the Nature Risk Solution is applicable across multiple sites, industries, and geographies, consolidating nature related risk data into a single, efficient platform. The solution not only ensures defensible metric selection and materiality thresholds but also provides a cost-effective and resource-light solution for businesses seeking to enhance their nature literacy and resilience.

Sebastian Leape, CEO of Natcap added:

“Nature is in crisis, and biodiversity loss threatens the stability of global ecosystems. Innovation and cross-industry collaboration are essential to tackling these challenges. We are proud to be a part of the MS&AD global landscape through our partnership with Aioi R&D Lab-Oxford, AND-E and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance.  This collaboration enables us to accelerate the expansion of our offering to  help businesses identify, prioritize, and manage their nature-related risks.”
